Background of the Study
Language brokering refers to the practice where children translate and interpret language for family members in bilingual households. In many bilingual Hausa households, children often assume the role of language brokers, facilitating communication between their parents and the broader community. This practice not only enhances their bilingual proficiency but also positions them as critical cultural mediators (Salihu, 2023). Language brokering is an informal process that requires a high level of linguistic competence, cognitive flexibility, and cultural awareness. Through regular practice, children develop advanced skills in both Hausa and English, which can have long-term educational and social benefits. However, the responsibilities of language brokering can also place undue stress on young learners, potentially affecting their academic performance and self-esteem (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the roles and experiences of child language brokers in bilingual Hausa households, exploring how these responsibilities influence language development, identity, and family dynamics (Aminu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although language brokering can enhance bilingual proficiency, it may also burden children in bilingual Hausa households with responsibilities beyond their developmental stage. The pressure to interpret and translate for family members may lead to stress, miscommunication, and academic distractions (Salihu, 2023). Educators and parents have expressed concerns about the long-term effects of such responsibilities on children’s cognitive and social development (Ibrahim, 2024). There is a need for systematic research to understand the balance between the benefits and challenges of language brokering among children. This study aims to address these issues by investigating the impact of language brokering on bilingual language development and overall well-being in Hausa households (Aminu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the prevalence and nature of language brokering in bilingual Hausa households.
To evaluate its impact on children’s bilingual development and academic performance.
To propose strategies to support child language brokers while minimizing stress.
Research Questions:
What are the common language brokering practices among children in Hausa households?
How does language brokering affect their bilingual proficiency?
What measures can mitigate potential negative impacts?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the complex role of language brokering among children in bilingual Hausa households. Its findings will inform parents, educators, and policymakers on how to support child language brokers in a manner that enhances bilingual development without compromising well-being (Salihu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to language brokering roles in bilingual Hausa households and excludes broader societal language mediation practices.
Definitions of Terms:
Language Brokering: The process by which children interpret and translate for family members.
Bilingual Households: Homes where two languages are regularly used.
Hausa Households: Families in which Hausa is predominantly spoken.
